Category 1
(clean water): the source of the water is from a clean water source such as a plumbing supply line.
Category 2 (gray water damage): the source of the water may contain chemicals or other contaminates that could cause discomfort or sickness to the occupants. Some examples include appliance discharge, a broken waterbed or fish tank or overflows from toilet bowls.
Category 3 (black water): contains pathogenic agents and is grossly unsanitary because large amounts of bacteria can enter the interior environment and pose potentially serious health risks to the occupants. Examples include toilet backflow that originate from beyond the toilet trap, flooding from seawater, ground surface water or rising water from rivers and streams. Category 2 water that is not removed promptly, may be re-classified as category 3.
The Environmental Protection Agency (EPA) says, "Stop the water leak quickly and begin restoration during the first 24 hours. It is important to dry water damaged areas and items within 24-48 hours to prevent mold growth".
Most people think of water damage as something that occurs due to sudden flooding due to a pipe burst, flood or other water catastrophe. But that's not necessarily true. Sometimes it happens gradually and shows up in the form of tiny spots and stains which may be almost imperceptible.
Most gradual and even some sudden water damage can be avoided with routine maintenance and assistance from qualified contractors. Take a few extra moments every week to check potential trouble spots in and around your home (e.g., around toilets, under kitchen and bathroom sinks and around hot water heaters). Check bathrooms and other moist areas for mold--another possible sign of water damage. Early detection can make the difference between a quick plumbing fix or minor clean up and major structural repairs.
